Adam I is the external, career-driven, ambitious side, which Brooks calls the &#8220;r\u00e9sum\u00e9&#8221; self. The subject of this book, Adam II, is internal, humble and the &#8220;eulogy&#8221; self, the one who \u201cwants to have a serene inner character.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The bulk of the book is eight chapters of biographical sketches. Loosely one per chapter they are:\u00a0Frances Perkins,\u00a0Dwight D. Eisenhower\u00a0with a page or two devoted to redefining\u00a0sin\u00a0for contemporary times,\u00a0Dorothy Day,\u00a0George Marshall,\u00a0A. Philip Randolph\u00a0and\u00a0Bayard Rustin\u00a0who organized the\u00a0March on Washington, the novelist\u00a0George Eliot\u00a0and her mate\u00a0George Lewes,\u00a0Augustine\u00a0and his mother\u00a0Monica,\u00a0Samuel Johnson\u00a0and\u00a0Michel de Montaigne, winding up with sketches of\u00a0Johnny Unitas\u00a0and\u00a0Joe Namath. Each chapter describes the personal weaknesses that the individual overcame.<\/p>\n<p>Brooks concludes with fifteen numbered points, a sort of Notes for those who would like the &#8220;condensed message of this book.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><i><b>The Road to Character<\/b><\/i>\u00a0is the fourth book written by journalist\u00a0David Brooks.
